When you do redox titrations using KMnO4, the solution must be acidic. Why couldn't you just use HCL to supply H+ ions?
The redox titrations using KMnO4 are done in acidic medium, as KMnO4 is a strong oxidizing agent.
Moreover in acidic medium, the hydrogen ions have the capability of donating electrons in the reaction process and also Oxide ions accept hydrogen ions and form water. Hence acidic medium is maintained in the reaction.
now genrally we use sulphuric acid to supply the H+ ions to the reaction medium, whereas when we add HCL the release of chlorine gas which is toxic takes place. Otherthan this reason we can add any of the two solvents from HCl and H2SO4.
