Question

How to calculate % yield and % recovery of any product in chemistry

How to calculate % yield and % recovery of any product in chemistry

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The definition of

% yield --> (actual amount obtained) / theoretical amount calculated *100%

Note that for reacitons/crystallization recovery

actual amount obtained) <= theoretical amount calculated

and max ratio is 1, i.e. 100% yield

for

% recovery = material recovered / Max material present initially * 100%

recall that

material recovered <= Max material present initially

similar a sin yield, the material recovered cant increase, since it is based on the initial amount of material

Recrystallization is a product purification technique that is commonly used in many organic chemistry labs; if you go on to take an organic chemistry course, you may use it to purify samples of aspirin or ibuprofen that you synthesize. Explain the theory behind recrystallization; that is, how does it function to purify a compound?
