7. Dyes that exhibit changes in color with respective to changes in their surroundings are called colorimetric dyes. Based on knowledge of methyl orange pH sensitivity, suggest two or three dyes that will have application in identification of cancer cells. Explain in detail
The use of dye in cancer cells identification is prime application today.
Flourescent dyes are used for detection of cancer cells
1) Sulforhodamine (SRB): It is used for colorimetric detection of cancer cells. Just like phenolphthalein, methyl organge and thymol the dye is also pH sensitive. To use it the dye is dissolved in 1% CH3COOH.
2) Hoechst 33342: Unlike above dye it is cytotoxic dye. We knoe that DNA contains Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine and Thymine. Cytosine binds with Guanine and Adenine binds with Thymine. The dye acts by binding to DNA in the Adenine-Thymine rich area. It depends upon the stage of meiosis (mitosise or cell cycle).
