Dyes which have application in cancer cell identification are:

  • Hoechst 33342: it is a cytotoxic dye. It binds to the AT rich regions of the minor groove in DNA. The fluorescent intensity of this dye is dependent on the amount of DNA, shape of chromatin. The intensity of dye also depends on the cell cycle stage that the cell is in at present.
  • Sulforhodamine (SRB): It is dissolved in 1% acetic acid, and then used as a dye, for colorimetric detection of cancer cells. It has pH sensitivity, just like methyl orange.
