Why do MRS Imaging Scientists take the “area underneath a chemical shift peak” rather than the peak height as an estimate of molecule concentration? DEMONSTRATE MATHEMATICALLY.
The scientisist use MRS primarily for the analysis of variations in chemical ratios and/or concentrations. The area underneath each peak is proportional to the number of equivalent protons creating the signal.
During study through MRS (like brain tumur) we are intersted in the concentration of certain specific metabilites or compouds which are being compared with the concentration in normal brain. Hence by knowing the peak area for the endogenous metabolites scientist can detect the presence of tumur, the extent of tumur etc.
