Where in the cell does fatty acid oxidation take place?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

inside the mitochondria fatty acid oxidation take place. general procesure given as below

  • most fat stored in eukaryotic organism as triglyceride with use of enzyme 'lipase' triglyceride break into glycerol molecule and three fatty acid
  • 'Acyl- CoA synthase' yield fatty acid to fatty acyl CoA before enter into mitochondria.
  • after fatty acid been acylated it is ready to enter into mitochondria
  • there are two carrier protein 'carnitine acyl transferase I and II' one located outer membrane and one located inner membrane of mitochondria both help for entry of acyl CoA into mitochondria.
  • once inside mitochondria the fatty acid -CoA can enter into beta oxidation.
  • Beta oxidation of fatty acid take place into mitochondria and cleaved acyl CoA formed inter into TCA and ETC because it is allready whithin mitochondria.

Both fatty acid oxidation and glycolysis lead to the formation of significant amounts of ATP. Explain why a cell preparation containing all of the enzymes required for either pathway can't generate ATP when a fatty acid and glucose is added unless a small amount of ATP is also added to the preparation. Be specific.
