Regulation of TG/FA metabolism (including both fatty acid oxidation and fatty acid synthesis) by insulin (eating), glucagon (fasting), and AMPK. What are the key targets of each metabolic pathway.
Fatty acid biosynthesis
Fatty acid oxidation
Regulation of Fatty acid oxidation:
The availability of Free fatty acids (FFA) regulate the net utilisation through fatty acid oxidation.
Levels of FFA are in turn controlled by Glucagon and Insulin. Glucagon increases FFA level and Insulin decreases FFA levels. Therefore Glucagon stimulates fatty acid oxidation whereas insulin inhibits fatty acid oxidation.
Glucagon inhibits fatty acid synthesis and promotes fatty acid oxidation. Insulin favours fatty acid synthesis but inhibits fatty acid oxidation.
