Hexokinase is the enzyme which is responsible for the phosphorylation of glucose into glucose 6 phosphate. This is the first step of glycolysis.

This is an irreversible reaction.

It is a part of catabolic reaction. Glycolysis is a catabolic process. It is involves the breakdown of one molecule of glucose into two molecules of pyruvic acid.

Hexokinase is present in cytoplasm of all the cells where glycolysis takes place and therefore this enzyme also performs its function there.
