In the ecosystem, there are producers, consumers and decomposers. Producers can be called as autotrophs because they produce their own food. Heterotrophs cannot produce their own food and they depend on producers for their food. Therefore, consumers and decomposers can be called as heterotrophs because they both depend on producers. Heterotrophic organisms can be divided in the ecological study of food interactions as consumers and decomposers.

Decomposers plays a vital role as they replenish the soil by decomposing dead and decayed matter.
