At which step(s) in the oxygen transport system will changes in hemoglobin have the most impact when comparing high altitude and low altitude adapted mammals?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer :-

At high altitude concentration of oxygen in atmosphere is less as compared to low altitude. As a result less oxygen will diffuse in the blood . therefore In order to maintain oxygen demands of the body the mammalian body will stimulate bone marrow to produce more haemoglobin. This is known as accimatisation.

Oxygen transport system involves following steps :-

1) air from atmosphere inhaled by lungs

2) exchange of gases across alveolar membrane and endothelial capillary membrane

3) transportation of oxygen molecy via blood to the various parts of body.

4) exchange of gases between tissue and endothelial capillary membrane.

The stage during which oxygen is diffused into blood and carried to various parts of the body shows the greater impact of haemoglobin change in mammals adapted to low altitude vrs high altitude.

Which is true about how are cells use oxygen? A. When oxygen is present pyruvate is converted to lactate which enters the citric acid cycle. The reduced coenzymes donate hydrogen ions and high energy electrons to the electron transport chain, and oxygen acts as the final acceptor of hydrogen ions and low energy electrons after the hydrogen ions have passed through ATP synthase. B. When oxygen is present pyruvate is converted to Acetyl CoA which enters the citric acid cycle....

All mammals have oxygen sensing system to directly monitor the oxygen availability and energy sensing system which indirectly monitors the carbon source supply. Considering the important role of nitrogen element in biological system, one can assume the existence of a nitrogen-sensing system as well. If you agree, discuss what this system might be. If you do not agree, write down your reasoning and argument. Either way you choose, please cite relevant reference to support your argument.

The biochemical analysis Red blood cells (erythrocytes) and sickle cell anemia (which can lead to a splenic infraction on high altitude): QA) Sickle cell anemia is a genetic disease that is caused by a single nucleotide change in the gene sequence for hemoglobin. This mutation changes a codon from GAG to GUG, which causes an alteration in the hemoglobin protein, changing what is typically an E into a V. Explain and compare the properties of E and V that make...
