Changes in which of the following variables will have the greatest impact to blood flow?

A. Blood viscosity

B. Blood vessel length

C. Blood vessel diameter

D. Colloid osmotic pressure

E. Changes in all of the above will equally influence blood flow

Homework Answers

Answer #1

C. Blood vessel diameter

  • Blood flow = Change in pressure / Resistance .

Poiseuille’s equation:

Blood flow = π ΔP r4/8ηλ

λ = Length of blood vessel,

η = Viscosity of blood vessel.

r4 = 4th power of radius.

By substituting

Resistance = 8ηλ/πr4.

  • By examining the equation only 3 variables viscosity, vessel length, and radius.
  • Two of these variables, viscosity and vessel length, will change slowly in the body.Hence option A and D are wrong.
  • But radius can be changed rapidly by vasoconstriction and vasodialation.
  • Option D is wrong , because colloidal osmotic pressure donot affect blood flow.
  • Further, small changes in the radius will greatly affect flow, since it is raised to the fourth power in the equation.Hence option E is wrong.
