how do prophase, metaphase, and anaphase of meiosis 1 differ from propose, metaphase and anaphase of mitosis

Homework Answers

Answer #1
Meiosis-I Mitosis
Prophase It is large phase and consists of 5 sub-phase,i.e., leptotene, zygotene, pachytene, diplotene & diakinesis. Crossing over takes place between non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes It doesn't have any sub-phases and no crossing over.
Metaphase Homologous chromosomes pair up at the middle of cell. Individual chromosomes appear in the middle of cell.
Anaphase Homologous chromosomes are separated and move to opposite poles Sister chromatids of each chromosome are separated and move to opposite poles

The goal of mitosis is to produce cells that are genetically identical to the original parent cell; the goal of meiosis is to produce cells that contain twice the number of chromosomes as the original parent cell.
