Crossing over is the physical exchange of genetic material between two homologous chromosomes. It occurs during pachytene stage of prohase 1 in meiosis 1. At the sites where crossing over occurs chiasmata is formed which is the point of contact or link between arms of two non sis chromatids of homologous chromosomes. Crossing over gives rise to new combinations in gamete and leads to variation in next generation.

So, correct answer is '(A) prophase 1'.
