Please Give an Explination as to why this is correct
Which of the following is true about Ran?
a) Ran can translocate through nuclear pores only when it is bound to Importins.
b) Ran GAPs help hydrolyze the GTP of Ran.
c) Ran GEFs help hydrolyze the GTP of Ran.
d) The binding of Ran-GDP to Importin releases the cargo protein from Importin.
Ran is a RAs elated nuclear protein or GTP-binding nuclear protein Ran encoded by the RAN gene. it is a small protein of 25kDa and is involved in functions such as transport into and out of the cell nucleus during interphase and also plays a role in mitosis.
Ran exists in GDP-bound and GTP-bound forms in the cell. RanGDP is converted into RanGTP through the action of RCC1 (nucleotide exchange factor for Ran). RCC1 is also called RanGEF or Ran Guanine nucleotide Exchange Factor. GTPase-activity of Ran is activated through interaction with Ran GTPase activating protein called RanGAP. This activity is facilitated by complex formation with Ran-binding protein (RanBP). GTPase-activation converts RanGTP to RanGDP and ends the Ran cycle. Ran translocates cargo by binding to exportin proteins. Therefore, option b is correct.
