What happens to plant cells in isotonic, hypotonic and hypertonic solutions. Which is best suited to plant cells?
The hypotonic solutions are most suited to plant cells as in hyotonic environment they'll be able to take up water and become turgid. Turgidity is an important factor for plant cells as it gelps to maintain the rigidity and stability of the cells.
Hypertonic environment on the other hand, will lead to the loss of water from the plant cells making them flaccid (shrunk) and the cells would collapse.
In case of isotonic environment, the plant cells will neither get turgid nor flaccid as the concentration of solute inside and outside the cell is same. Due to this, the plant parts will droop and would not be able to hold sunlight and will eventually die.
