determine if the following is hypotonic, hypertonic or isotonic: an ophthalmic solution containing 40 mg/ml of cromolyn sodium and .01% of benzalkonium chloride in purified water in purified water.

An isotonic solution is one in which the concentration of solutes is the same both inside and outside of the cell.

A hypotonic solution is one in which the concentration of solutes is greater inside the cell than outside of it,.

a hypertonic solution is one where the concentration of solutes is greater outside the cell than inside it.

Tonic contribution of cromolyn sodium (E value =

0.11):

40 mg/mL x 100 mL = 4,000 mg = 4 g

4 g x 0.11 = 0.44 g

Tonic contribution of benzalkonium chloride (E value =

0.16):

100 mL x 0.01% w/v = 0.01g

0.01 g x 0.16 = 0.0016 g

The greater the amount of solute, the more hypertonic one is to the other. means that cromolyn sodium is hypotonic as its concerntration is higher as compare to  benzalkonium chloride .
