What is hypertonic, isotonic and hypotonic solution?

What is hypertonic, isotonic and hypotonic solution?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Hypertonic solution - when a cell is kept in a solution, if that solution has more quantity of solutes, as compared to the cell. That solution is called as Hypertonic solution. In this condition cell will shrink as water will move out of the cell.(plasmolysed cell)

Isotonic solution- if the solution has equl concentration of solutes as compared to cell, that solution is called as isotonic solution.

Hypotonic solution - if the solution has less concentration of solutes as compared to cell, that solution is called as Hypertonic solution. In this condition cell will swell up as water will move into the cell. (Turgid cell)
