How would you know which cells are fibroblasts or epithelial in a flask?
Question- How would you know which cells are fibroblasts or epithelial in a flask?
Answer- In a culture flask the epithelial cells float in the suspension while fibroblasts adhere to the substrate as fibroblasts are involved in secreting components of extracellular matrix, variety of fibres and ground substance. Fibroblast migrate slowly over the substratum as individual cells. After adherence of fibroblast to the surface, the epithelial cells thereafter grow on the basement membrane, forming monolayer.
Epithelial cells coat or line the outer surface of body structures. They consist apico-basal polarity and remain firmly attached to each other through communicating junctions. They are separated from other cell compartments through basement membrane (connective tissues). While fibroblast is required for maintaining structural integrity of connective tissues.
