Archaea is derived from the Greek word archaios, meaning “ancient” or “primitive,”.
It was earlier considered that prokaryotes considered to be single group of organism known as bacteria later in 1977 American microbiologist Carl Woese, on analyses of ribosomal RNA, stated that the prokaryotes, consist of two separate lineages. Then he named these two lineages as eubacteria and the archaebacteria. Then the archaea being differentiated from bacteria it is subsequently changed to bacteria and archaea.
