Answer- no pathogenecity is not essentially between strains of the same species.
Pathogenecity is the ability to cause a disease in another organism . It could be organisms from different species or same species.
For example swine flue or H1N1 ,or avian flu or H1N5 , both are respiratory diseases in swine and birds respectively ,when humans consume an affected organsim , humans also contract the flu as the virus is virulent or pathogenic in both humans and animals.
