List the three zones of growth in a plant root starting from the one buried deepest in the soil. Breifly describe what is happening in each area. You may ignore the root cap.
1. Deepest Zone
2. Middle Zone
3. Zone closest to the surface of the soil
Answer- The three zones of roots are-
1) Region of maturation (deepest)- From this region, some the epidermal cells form very fine, thread- like structures called root hair, which absorb water minerals from the soil.
2) Region of elongation (middle)- The cells here undergo rapid enlargement and elongation, and are responsible for the increase in the root's length m
3) Region of meristematic activity (closest to soil surface)- The cells here are small, thin-walled with dense protoplasm; and they divide repeatedly.
