1a. After performing SDS-PAGE of a protein extract, there will be a number of protein "bands" in a lane of the gel. In a single "band" all proteins have the same ___.

Select one:

a. molecular mass

b. R-groups with mostly hydrophobic amino acids

c. tertiary structure

d. function

1b.

Solve for x. Your answer should have three significant digits. (the answer is not 15.1)

10x = 151

Homework Answers

Answer #1

A. Molecular mass

Gel electrophoresis with the technique of separation of molecules on the basis of their size and charge. Sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis is used for separation of protein fragments.

All the proteins are imparted a uniform negative charge using sodium dodecyl sulfate which is an anionic detergent. All of the fragments move according to their size on the gel towards the positive electrode.

After the separation is completed, bands can be seen on the gel. Each band if having a specific molecular weight and may contain more than one peptide chains.

B. Answer MUST BE 15.1

This is because three significant figures means there should be three three digits (1 to 9) in a row but we will not count the number of zeros present before the starting of the digit and after the ending of the digit.

Please rate high.
