The human gene X is 200,000 nucleotides in length. The rate of
translocation of RNA polymerase II is 15 nucleotides per second and
this is the rate limiting step in mRNA synthesis.
A. How long does it take to make a single mRNA?
B. How long does it take to make 10 mRNA?
C. How many mRNA can be synthesized in 6 hours?
A - One minutes = 60 seconds.
1 hour = 60*60 = 3600 seconds.
Given that rate of translocation of RNA polymerase II is 15 nucleotides per second.
Time take to complete mRNA synthesis = 200000/15 = 13334 seconds.
1 hour = 60 seconds.
So total minutes = 13334 / 60 = 222 minutes = 3 hours 42 minutes.
B - To make one mRNA it takes 3 hour 42 minutes or 222 minutes.
To make 10 mRNA it will take 223*10 = 2220 minutes or 37 hours.
C- One mRNA is complete in 3 hours 42 minutes. So, a maximum of 1 mRNA can by synthesized in 6 hours as the other mRNA is still synthesizing.
