Will we run out of new effective antibiotics? Discuss.

Answer #1

The pace at which disease causing bacteria are becoming antibiotic resistant is much much greater than the pace at which new effective antibiotics are being developed.Within the next ten years, there is a high possibility that the antibiotic resistance could spread to more and more species of bacteria and this would help in rapid evolution of disease causing bacteria. The research in the field of developing new effective antibiotics also faces challenges and barriers in many countries and this includes legislative and economic barriers.Along with this is the lack of proper usage of antibiotics, infection prevention and control which makes us run out of new effective antibiotics.

Each person receiving antibiotic A is matched with an equivalent person (age within 5 years, same sex), to whom antibiotic B is given. These people are asked to return to the clinic within 1 week to see if the gonorrea has been eliminated. Suppose the results are as follows: 1) for 40 pairs of people, both antibiotics are successful 2) for 20...
