List the organs of the digestive system in the order in which they come into contact with the food we eat. Which organs are primarily responsible for the digestion and absorption of nutrients?
When we eat food, first digestion takes place in our mouth by two methods, mechanical and chemical digestion (partially digestion for carbohydrates) through salivary amylase, then esophagus assists its movement, stomach for churning and digestion of proteins.
Maximum digestion occur in our small intestine (pancreatic and liver juices like trypsin, chymotrypsin, lipase, pancreatic amylases and nucleases) which has all the chemicals or enzyme for digestion of food and this is also the place where all molecules (amino acids, fatty acids and glucose absorbed by microvilli present in small intestine). Vitamins and other nutrient also absorbed in small intestine. Then digested food moves to large intestine, wherein water absorbed and digested material stays until defecation occurs through rectum.
Absorption: Small intestine through villi or microsvillies.
