The question is from Advanced Biochemistry and cellular metabolism.
3.What is the source and function of Leptin? How blood glucose levels regulate the activity of Glycogen phosphorylase? (2+1 = 3 marks)
The source ofthe hormone Leptin is the adipose cells. The ordinary function of proton is to inhibit the feeling of hunger. It has the function opposite to ghrelin which promotes hunger. Both these hormones act such a way that the energy balance is maintained in the body.
Glycogen phosphorylase cleaves glycogen into individual glucose units. It increases the blood glucose levels by glycogenolysis. Increases blood glucose inhibits glycogen phosphorylase activity. This is by a cascade of reactions. It can be regulated by allosteric and phosphorylation mechanism.
