Many plants defend themselves from herbivores by producing chemical compounds. Interestingly some of these compounds include hormones that are extremely similar to those produced by some insects. Why might a plant want to produce insect hormones?
Question:
Answer: Herbivorous animals are those animals who feed on only plants. Insect secret hormones to express their presence and toxicity. Plants are able to produce some insect like hormones i.e., analogue of ecdysone, known as hormonomimetic. There are many possibilities of hormonomimetic plants. One reason is co-evolution with some mutually related insects. Other reason for production of mimic of insect hormones is to keep herbivorous away. The fragrance and the activity of hormones on herbivorous will ensure the presence of insects so herbivores will not come to it.
