Uridylylation of PII stimulates the formation of glutamine from glutamate. True or False?

Uridylylation of PII stimulates the formation of glutamine from glutamate. True or False?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ques: Uridylylation of PII stimulates the formation of glutamine from glutamate. True or False?

True.

Glutamine synthetase is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of Glutamate and  Ammonia into Glutamine. This enzyme is regulated by Adenyl transferase which in turn is regulated by a regulator protein PII. If PII is uridylylated, it forms a complex with the adenyl transferase and activates Glutamine Synthetase by deadenylation. If it is not uridylylated, then the complex deactivates Glutamine synthetase by adenylation.

In bacteria the glutamate dehydrogenase reaction favors glutamate formation. In which human tissue (i.e. liver or muscle) does the reaction operate in a similar manner? Would it be metabolically advantageous if conditions in humans were altered to make the glutamate dehydrogenase reaction favor the same direction (i.e. towards glutamate formation) in both liver and muscle?
