Q3.04. A bacterium is found that can photosynthesize in the presence of light but uses hydrogen sulfide and releases elemental sulfur as a by-product. This organism can best be classified as

a A. chemolithoautotroph

B. chemolithoheterotroph

C. photolithoautotroph

D. photoorganoheterotroph

E. pathogen

Homework Answers

Answer #1

C. Photolithoautotroph

Photolithoautotroph are capable to photosynthesize in the presence of light. During photosytnthesis these bacteria use H2S as electron donor instead of H2O as in green plants. H2S oxidized and produce elemental sulphur by-product. These bacteria are autotrophs because they prepare their own food by photosynthesis; and lithotrophs because they use inorganic compound like H2S. Therefore, this organism can best be classified as photolithoautotroph eg., green sulphur bacteria.

E. coli is an interesting bacteria. It can reproduce asexually, which means that a bacterium does not need a partner to reproduce. Under ideal conditions, a small population of e. coli can double every 20 minutes.
