  1. If you have an operon containing genes that code for proteins that will aid the cell in getting rid of an antibiotic, what type of operon is it?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans: operon is inducible operon.

explanation:- operon is gene which regulate protein synthesis in bacteria and virus. there are two types of operon inducible and repressible operon. inducible operon induce synthesis of mRNA and protein which helps in catalytic activity. lac operon is an example of inducible operon as it synthesize protein (enzyme) that metabolize lactose. in above example operon contains gene which code for protein (enzyme) that helps in getting rid of antibiotics hence it is inducible operon. Trp operon is an example of repressor operon. it synthesize enzyme which helps in synthesis of amino acid tryptophan. so when tryptophan level is low it express gene for enzyme and it repress when tryptophan level is high.

The lac operon in E. coli regulates the co-expression of three genes needed for the degradation of lactose (but absence of glucose) in the growth medium. These genes are not expressed when the bacteria has no lactose to feed on. How does the cell prevent expressing the lac operon in the absence of lactose? How does the presence of lactose activate the transcription of these three genes? (You do not need to explain the glucose level regulation.)

The genome of the bacteriophage M13 was modified to include a CRISPR-Cas 9 operon with the following features: The operon includes a gene coding for protein Cas 9, and a gene coding a sgRNA. The CRISPR-Ca9 operon is under the control of a bacterial constitutive promoter. The sgRNA gene includes a spacer flanked by two repeats. The sequence of the spacer matches a sequence of an antibiotic resistance gene present in an antibiotic resistant form of a bacteria. Bacteria containing...
