Kwashiorkor results from a dietary deficiency of protein. Why does this lead to edema? Explain in terms of fluid balance.
Kwashiorkor is a form of malnutrition .Kwashiokor is also known as edematous malnutrition. This occurs due to the deficiency of proteins in the body.Due to the retention of water in the stomach, swelling of the gut or edema will occur.Correct amount of proteins in the body helps to hold salt and water inside the blood vessels. When there is deficiency , the osmotic imbalance will ocur in the gastrointestinal system ,.Severe fluid retention is due to the irregularities in lymphatic system or sometimes an indication of capillary exchange.Lymphatic system has a major role in fluid recovery.People with kwashiorkor have the reduced ability to recover fluids. It is mainly accomplished by re absorption f water and proteins which are then returned to the blood .Edema in highly malnourished children is due to the compromised fluid recovery.
