Summarize what Alveolar Partial Pressure is and how Volume and Pressure relate to breathing.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Partial pressure is the force exerted by a gas and the sum of the partial pressures of all the gases in a mixture equals the total pressure. So, partial pressureis extremely important in predicting the movement of gases.

The partial pressure of oxygen in alveolar air is about 104 mm Hg while the partial pressure of the oxygenated pulmonary venous blood is about 100 mm Hg. Oxygen enters the alveoli at a high rate, and the partial pressure of oxygen in the alveoli remains high when the ventilation is sufficient.

The relationship between gas pressure and volume helps to explain the mechanics of breathing by Boyle's Law which is the gas law which states that in a closed space, pressure and volume are inversely related. ie, as pressure increases, voulume decreases and vice versa.

Hope this helps you. Thank you ?

Control of Breathing. Select the MOST CORRECT answer. An increase in the partial pressure of carbon dioxide in plasma leads to a stimulation of medullary chemoreceptors. A decrease in the partial pressure of oxygen in plasma leads to a stimulation of peripheral chemoreceptors. An increase in ventilation leads to a decrease of the partial pressure of carbon dioxide in plasma which leads to an increase of CSF pH which leads to a decrease of respiratory drive. Mokun and Miguel made a bet about who could decrease their alveolar Pco2 the most by changing their breathing pattern. They used a spirometer to make sure they started with the same tidal volume and frequency. Mokun doubled her tidal volume and decreased her respiratory rate by one-half. Miguel decreased his tidal volume by one-half and doubled his respiratory rate. Assume that their total lung capacity and dead space were the same. Who probably won? How did you know?
