  • It have been found in the neuron of the auditory system , somatosensory system and the visual system.
  • Receptive field encompasses the sensory receptors that feed into sensory neurons and thus include specific receptors on a neuron as well as collective of receptors that are capable of activating a neuron via synaptic connection.
  • The concept of receptive field is central to sensory neurobiology, because it provide correct description of the location at which a sensory stimulus must be presented inorder to elicit a response from a sensory cell.

Can someone explain how the receptive field of photoreceptors (dots of light) build to circles of light for ganglion cells and edges/lines for the visual cortex. I know the ganglion cells build their visual field by combining visual fields of many photoreceptors and that cortical cells build their visual fields by combining the fields of many ganglion cells but what causes this to happen? What is the process? Drawings/Pictures can be helpful too. Thank you in advance!
