Discuss how protein loss from glomerular capillaries is prevented during filtration

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Filtration process occurs through the fenestrated capillary network in the glomerulus. The pores of the these capillaries are much smaller allowing only very smaller molecules to filter through it.only molecules with molecular weight of less than 1000 KD could pass through it, the smallest protein in the body even has molecular weight of 65000 KD. hence proteins are unable to get filtered through the glomerulus.

Also the slits of the podocytes forming the pores are lined by the negatively charged protein ions that repels the negatively charged plasma proteins to prevent their filtration.
