What factors regulate glomerular filtration rate (increase and decrease it)? How can urine formation be increased? What is a diuretic?
Glomerular filtration rate is regulated by nephrons, factors that effect GFR are blood pressure and blood volume. The glomerular capillary hydrostatic pressure determines the GFR rate. "Hydro" means water hence more water consumption in the body the more the GFR rate. Diuretics are pills that increase salt and water removal from the renal system. They are administered for management of hypertension.Types of diuretics are potassium sparing diuretics, thiazides, and loop diuretics (acting on loop of Henle). Furosemide, a loop diuretic is commonly administered for hypertension or cardiac failure.
