In asthma the airway if the person become affected and cause the inflammation of the wall of the airway by narrowing the respiratory tract . This cause the air entry as well as expulsion difficult to occur . This makes breathing troublesome in asthma as the airway is congested . So tachypnea is common in asthma

In emphysema increase in oxidative mediators and the oxidative stress occur that results in reduction of the repair if alveoli and hypersecretion if glands . Air trapping and enlargement of air space occur . This results in less space for reg air to diffuse results in v/ q mismatch leading to tachypnea

In both asthma and emphysema the air exchange is difficult and cause trouble in breathing.
