Ans.1. Emphysema is a chronic disorder in which alveolar walls and lung tissues are damaged leading to loss of stretching power of alveoli which ultimately decreases the respiratory surface for exchange of gases.In this alveoli are unable to support bronchial tubes. Cigarette smoking is major cause of emphysema.

Actually alveoli in healthy person are like balloons.As we breath in and out they get bigger and smaller to move air through our lungs.But in condition of emphysema due to decrease of elasticity of lungs less oxygen will reach our blood which results to the feeling of short of breath and to overcome this we breath more rapidly.
