Scenario: DW is a 65-year-old, 135 kg male who visited his primary care physician for a routine examination. His blood pressure was 158/100 mmHg and his heart rate was 71 bpm. Stroke volume and cardiac output were normal. Serum renin levels were in the normal range. A chest x-ray revealed left ventricular hypertrophy. Other clinical findings were unremarkable.
Would you consider giving this patient a muscarinic receptor agonist to help lower blood pressure? Explain.
Describe some of the problems/damage in tissues and/or organs that may occur in untreated and poorly managed hypertension.
The muscarinic receptor agonist (MRA) is anticholinergic and blocks the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor activity as the name suggests. This MRA functions as maintenance of homeostasis by it's action.
MRA causes tachycardia and rise in blood pressure but the negative feedback ultimately causes vasomotor center to lower the raised blood pressure due to vasodilation. Hence patient could be given muscarinic receptor agonist to lower the blood pressure.
