The wall of the heart consists of three layers:
- epicardium (external layer): The epicardium is
the thin outer layer of the wall and is built up of delicate
connective tissue
- myocardium (middle layer): Consist of cardiac
muscle fibers, which helps in heart contractions. The myocardium is
the thickest layer of the heart wall.
- endocardium (inner layer): Endocardium
(endo-cardium) is the thin inner layer of the heart wall. The
endocardium of heart atria is composed of smooth muscle,
and elastic fibers.
