Blood and large amounts of protein were found in the urine of a woman with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). What is the explanation for these findings
Systemic lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue in many parts of the body. It can harm skin, joints, kidneys and brain and may be fatal. When it affects the kidneys then it is known as lupus nephritis. Lupus nephritis causes inflammation (swelling or scarring) of the small blood vessels that filter wastes in the kidney (glomeruli). Lupus nephritis causes glomeruli to leak blood and protein into urine which results into pink or light brown foamy urine.
