Compare glycolitic pathways with ;
1) aerobic glycolysis in blood stream trypanosomes.

2) hydrogenosomal pathway in trichomonads

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Dear Student,

1) Glycolytic pathway is highly active in treponema.Blood stream of trypanosomes depend completely on glycolysis for their ATP supply.

Pyruvate is considered as the sole end product under aerobic conditions , with the redo balance by a shunt acting to regenerate DHAP to G3PD. And also glycolysis in the parasite is different from that of the host, and this is the reason why many drugs target this pathway for the treatment of African Sleeping Sickness.

2)Hydrogenases are double membraned organelle present in place of mitochondria because trichomonas lacks mitochondria .

Pyruvate is formed through glycolysis in the cytoplasm, which are sent to Hydrogenosomes . In Hydrogenosomes, they get metabolised to acetate and Carbon-di-oxide and ATP is formed by substrate level phosphorylation.

Hope this makes you clear...

Glycolysis (and its sister pathway gluconeogenesis) and the citric acid cycle are often referred to as the Central Metabolic Pathways. Identify at least 3 other metabolic in aerobic organisms (animal and or plant) that interact with these two central pathways. Following the oxidation of glucose in glycolysis, describe how an E. coli cell under aerobic conditions would regenerate NAD+. Also, for each organism briefly describe how ATP is produced under the indicated conditions by listing the pathways used and the mechanism of ATP synthesis.

Some explanations of glycolysis, lactic acid fermentation and aerobic cellular respiration seem to indicate that your cells SWITCH between the two options to finish glycolysis: lactic acid fermentation OR cellular respiration. This is not the case! Your cells do not choose EITHER lactic acid fermentation OR aerobic cellular respiration. What is the necessary item for glycolysis to continue to aerobic cellular respiration instead of lactic acid fermentation? Unless you are dead (no respiration, no blood circulation), are your muscle cells...
