Which of the following statements is true for phospholipids and sphingolipids?

Both are membrane proteins
Both contain a glycerol backbone
Both are glycosylated
Both have an amphiphatic organization
Both use serine as a head group

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Both have an amphiphatic organization.

Amphiphatic nature means it has both hydrophobic and hydrophillic component. A phospolipid has phosphate group in one end called the head and two side by side chain of fatty acids that make up the tail, the phosphate group is negatively charged making the head portion hydrop[hillic or water loving, the tail portion is uncharged making it hydrophobic or water fearing. The sphingolipids like the phospholipids are composed of polar head group (water loving) and two non polar tail (water fearing). The core of the sphingolipids is long chain amino alcohol called sphingosine.

Which statement is true about a plasma membrane? Group of answer choices It is a rigid structure that protects the cell like a shell. It is composed of a single layer of phospholipids. The molecules that make up most of the plasma membrane are polar at their heads and tails. The molecules that make up the membrane are phospholipids. The molecules making up the plasma membrane are locked in place.
