Knowing different muscles is a very important part of being a fitness professional. Please explain what shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS) is? What type of exercises would be contraindicative for a client with SIS?
Shoulder impingement syndrome is a painful shoulder condition
where the tendon of rotator cuff specially supraspinatus tendon is
entrapped between the acromion process and the head of humerus
during shoulder movement.
The entrapped tendon gets impinged when the shoulder is flexed and
internally rotated and causes pain. Repeated impingement of the
tendon results in tendonitis.
SIS results in pain, stiffness, weakness and loss of shoulder
ROM.
In patient with SIS any exercise that involves overhead shoulder
movement are contraindicated. Forcefull and jerky shoulder
activities should also be avoided.
