I have an urinary case study that I am working on.
Patients examination pulse:
82/min respiration: 18/min
temp: 37C
BP: 120/85
blood test results: pH: 7.32
albumin/blood:2.2 g/L
hematocrit: 35.4%
bicarbonate: 14 mEq/L
BUN: 51 mg/dL
Urinalysis: pH: 6.0
specfic gravitiy: 1.036
ketones/gluscose: both negative
proteins: 500mg/dL
color/clarity: yellow, clear
Brief about patient:30 years old, @ emergency room, shortness of breath, malaise, and nausea. pharyngitis two weeks ago, not throat problems now.
Question: Why is the hematocrit low? Include anatomy and physiology
He is having blood urea nitrogen level very hight that is the normal range is 6- 20 mg/ dl but here it is 51 mg/ dl .
This reveals that he is having acute kidney injury or his kidney is not functioning well .
One of the main function of kidney us to produce erythropoietin which stimulates the production of RBC from the bone marrow. When kidney is not working well the value of erythropoietin will reduce there by reducing the RBC level in blood
Hematocrit is the value of percentage of red cells compared to total blood cells in body .
So when the red-blood cells count decrease hematocrit value also decrease
