If collagen was destroyed, would you expect bones to become more flexible or more brittle? Why?
Collagen is nothing but a protein component which located in the bone, skin, connective tissues almost all over the body. This collagen in bone plays a major role by making the bone flexible and stronger to withstand the load of the body and to increase the bone strength. Along with collagen, the other minerals and calcium will also increase the bone strength and flexibility in normal individual.
So, If the collagen is destroyed or less or the collagen is ineffective the bones become brittle and weakened. Because the collagen has a major role in maintaining a strong bone witj flexibility and This happens in the condition called as osteogenesis imperfecta where the collagen producing gene is affected and the production of collagen is less or ineffective so the bones in the body will become brittle.
