Paired or not?: In each of the following
scenarios, determine if the data are paired.
(a) We would like to know if there is a "home field" advantage in
professional basketball. To find out, we random select 10 NBA teams
and calculate their average number of points during home games for
the 2019 season. We then calculate their average number of points
during away games for the 2019 season.
(b) Researchers want to know if free-range eggs have a thicker egg
shell than conventional farmed eggs. To compare, they randomly
select 20 free-range eggs and 20 conventional farmed eggs.
(c) Forest rangers wanted to better understand the rate of growth
for younger trees in the park. They took measruements of a random
sample of 50 young trees in 2009 and again measured those same
trees in 2019.
The data will be paired when same the same observation is used in the study at different time
