I'm taking an intro to stats course and we were asked to split and trim numbers for a stem and leaf plot. The numbers given are triple digit numbers and we were given the number 153 to be trimmed to 1|5. However, they didn't mention what happens to the three. I was also wondering if we have a number like 128 would it be 1|2 or would it round to 1|3?
if you are given the number 153 and it is then written as 1|5, then it means that the hundreds digit is stem and only tenth digit is leaf. 3 is removing as leaf because we are only considering hundreds place and tenth place digit.
In this case the unit digit or first place is unnecessary, so we just remove it from the digit
We dont pay attention to rounding it off before removing the unit digit
For example, if we have 128, then it would be written as 1|2 and we will remove the 8
so, we are not rounding it off to 130 and then removing the 0. This is incorrect.
Let us consider another example, if we have 167
then we will write it as 1|6 and removing the 7 from the leaf
we are not rounding it to 170 and then removing the 0.
