The overall of function of the nephron is :

  • To filter the blood, remove toxic substances, nitrogenous waste products and produce urine.

- Nephron is functional unit of the kidney.
- It functions to produce urine.

There are three steps occuring in nephrone for urine production :

1) Glomerular filtration : Contents of blood except blood cells and proteins enters into nephron (Bowman's capsule).


2) Selective reabsorption : Essential nutrients, water and ions are reabsorbed from renal tubules.

3) Tubular secretion : Drugs, H+ ions, K+ ions, urea, creatinine are secrete into renal tubule.


The fulid collected at terminal part of collecting duct is called urine.
