A recent survey of a school showed that of all students registered for a computer program in grade 11th, 54% of students also registered for a math course, 38% also registered for a physics course and 20% registered both. What is probability that the grade 11th students also registered for math course or a physics a) course? b) What is probability that the grade 11th students did not also register either a math or a physics course? Is a grade 11th student registering a math course in addition to physics course mutually exclusive?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Total students = a+b+c+u = 100% = 1

Students registering a maths course = a+c = 0.54

Students registering a physics course = b+c = 0.38

Students registering for both maths and physics = c = 0.2

a = 0.54-0.2 = 0.34

b = 0.38-0.2 = 0.18

u = 1-0.34-0.18-0.2 = 0.28

a) Probability students registered for maths or physics course = a+b+c = 0.34+0.18+0.2 = 0.72 = 72%

b) Probability that the grade 11th students did not also register either a math or a physics course: u = 0.28 = 28%

c) For mutually exclusive events:

P ( A ∪ B) = P (A) + P ( B )

P(Physics and Maths) = c = 0.2

P(Physics) = 0.38

P(Maths) = 0.54

P(Physics and Maths) ≠ P(Physics) + P(Maths)

So, student registering a math course in addition to physics course are not mutually exclusive.
