does the error term and the residual term mean the same thing for multiple regression model ?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Theoretically, yes. The error term and the residual term represent the same thing for multiple regression model, however there lies some important difference between them which is worth to be known even if they are usually used inter-changeably in the regression models. In general, it's not possible to calculate the error term whereas the residual can be calculated. This is because the error term represents the sum of difference between the observed values and the corresponding population values, whereas the residual represents the sum of difference between the observed values and the corresponding sample values.

Since, we usually use the outcomes of a sample as an estimate for the population parameters, residuals are also used as an estimate for the error term in the similar way.

TRUE or FALSE and Explain why: In a multiple regression model, the inclusion of a variable ?? , whose associated ?? = 0 in the population regression function, does not bias the estimates of all the other slope parameters but can increase their sampling variance. Also, TRUE or FALSE and explain why: It does not matter for the slope estimates if ?(?) ≠ 0 as long as there is a constant term in the regression model.

Consider the multiple regression model E(Y|X1 X2) = β0 + β1X1 + β2X2 + β3X1X2 Can we interpret β1 as the change in the conditional mean response for a unit change in X1 holding all the other predictors in the model fixed?
